Our Action Plan

In 2011, we are developing Nunavut’s Poverty Reduction Action Plan. This plan is being developed by individuals, community organizations, Inuit organizations, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc, and the Government of Nunavut. We are working together—the action plan will belong to all of us.

The development of Nunavut’s Poverty Reduction Action Plan involves four key stages of activity:

  1. Community Dialogues on Poverty Reduction (Winter 2011)
  2. Regional Roundtables for Poverty Reduction (May to June 2011)
  3. Poverty Summit (November 2011)
  4. Program Delivery - Taking Action!

Stage One: Community Dialogues (Winter 2011)

From February to April, 2011, people gathered across Nunavut to talk about poverty and the key issues and ideas for action. Volunteer dialogue facilitators participated in training sessions, sharing their own knowledge and perspectives on poverty, and then returned to their home communities to offer dialogue workshops and other options for collaboration.

The ideas expressed in community dialogues in each region were then compiled into the "Issues and Ideas for Change" Reports. All ideas and comments have been included in these reports. Nothing has been left out. Know what people in your region think about poverty reduction!

Stage Two: Regional Roundtables for Poverty Reduction (May and June 2011)

Next, people gathered together in each region to build on these reports. The four Regional Roundtables for Poverty Reduction included representatives from community groups, elected officials, service providers, government employees, Inuit organizations, elders, and other interested community members. These gatherings were chaired by NTI Vice President Jack Anawak, the Honourable Peter Taptuna, the Honourable Keith Peterson, and the Honourable James Aareak.

What action will we take to reduce poverty and develop the communities we envision? Each Regional Roundtable produced inspiring "Options for Action" Reports, which will be the foundation of discussions at the Poverty Summit in November 2011.

Stage Three: Poverty Summit (November 2011)

In November 2011, people from across Nunavut will gather in Iqaluit for the Poverty Summit. The summit will be chaired by Eva Aareak, Premier of Nunavut. At this gathering, Nunavut's Poverty Reduction Action Plan will be completed, based entirely on the perspectives and contributions made in community dialogues and regional tables that have taken place across Nunavut.

Stage Four: Program Delivery - Taking Action! (2012)

Following the signing of Nunavut's Poverty Reduction Action Plan, all organizations, departments, and individuals involved will take action. We will implement the programs that we have committed to beginning in early 2012.
