Reduce Poverty

Action to reduce poverty in Nunavut is urgently needed. The Government of Nunavut and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. have committed to working together to address poverty now.

The Tamapta Action Plan 2009-2013 states that to “Reduce Poverty” is one of the Government of Nunavut’s most important priorities. Tamapta also recognizes that collaboration is essential to poverty reduction:

In the spirit of working together and recognizing that poverty cannot be addressed by any one organization, the Government of Nunavut will actively engage its partners, including Inuit organizations, other governments, non-governmental organizations and our business community in the development of programs and policies to support Nunavummiut in their efforts at eliminating poverty.

The Government confirmed its commitment to poverty reduction in the 2010 Budget Address: "[We] are acutely aware that poverty remains a real concern in Nunavut. Too many Nunavummiut remain at risk. This government will develop a poverty reduction strategy in partnership with other governments, Inuit organizations, businesses, and anyone else with an interest in eliminating poverty."

Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. responded immediately in a news release on March 9, 2010, committing to collaborate with the Government of Nunavut and other partners to reduce poverty.

The Nunavut Roundtable for Poverty Reduction is the result of this foundational collaboration between the Goverment of Nunavut and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. We are working together to reach the mandate set out in Tamapta. Together, we are supporting public dialogue and engagement, raising awareness and understanding of poverty in our communities, developing Nunavut's Poverty Reduction Action Plan, and are committed to its immediate implementation.
